Mahwash
In recent months we have seen a sudden rise in the number of Afghan female singers hitting the Afghan musical airwaves. To many younger Afghans it appears as though this is a sign and form of Afghan liberation. But it must be pointed out that Afghanistan had female artists and musicians  dating back to early 1940' and 1950's. Although there were innumerable folklore Afghan singers prior to 1940's , the rise and prominence of many Afghan female singers started with the establishment of Kabul Radio. Parwin was the first Afghan female singer to sing on the Radio and this was followed by Ustaad Mahwash. Ustaad Mahwash - aka Faridah Mahwash was married to Taxi driver and she lived in Sharinow district of Kabul. Although she loved singing she never had any professional training. Her husband decided to help Mahwash get musical training. Daily he would drive her to music schools of Kabul  and while he toiled the day to earn a living, Mahwash would work on her music under the tutelage of Afghan grandmaster's of classical music. Within a very short span of time, Mahwash left everyone startled with her genetically gifted musical talents.  Faridah Mahwash soon metamorphosed into Ustaad Mahwash. Kabul radio listeners would request the stations to play more of Ustaad Mahwash and once Kabul TV stations were built, most of her previously made songs were turned into music videos. The rise and popularity of Mahwash remained and remains unparallel.

Next on our list is Mermun Rokhsana who was born in Shebergan Afghanistan and rose to popularity after she performed the music video for the movie 'QataParcha'. Watch the classic video of Mermun Rokhsana here: Click Here.

Hangama
Following the leads of Mahwash and Rokhsana, came along Hangama and Salma. Hangama and Salma both had a rich musical training and performed with various Afghan artists, popular during 1970's. Hangama and Salma both left Afghanistan in early 1980's following the soviet occupation of Afghanistan. While living in Exile in Europe and USA, their musical careers were cut short, but their musical albums that were left behind in Afghanistan and were listened by the Afghan music lovers. Although Salma did continue to make rare appearances in various concerts alongside her brother Haider Saleem, she did not make any other albums. While in exile, Hangama got divorced from Ahmad Wali, yet another famouse Afghan singer.
In recent years, Hangama has once again started singing. The butterfly that had once cocooned has once again emerged bold and strong. Her recent musical performances have been loudly applauded.

Parasto is married to Rahim Mehryar and their musical popularity reached its peak during the 1980's when the soviets were in Afghanistan. Although many other artists fled Afghanistan, Parasto and Rahim Mehryar stayed in their mother land and only after the fall of Afghanistan to warlords and ganglords during the Islamic Revolution, Parasto left Afghanistan for Geermany.
parasto
Parasto was famous for her unique style of wearing lots of make up, fancy head gears and feathers which were interestingly received pleasantly by Afghan masses.

Around the same time that Parasto was popular another Afghan female singer who was a member of "Gorohe GuliSorkh" - aka "Red Rose Ensemble" was non other than Wajiha. Wajiha was as well married to Farid Rastagar - yet another popular Afghan artist. Wajiha was (and still is) bold, energetic, charismatic and stunningly beautiful. From her early days in Kabul to escaping to Russia and then Germany following Afghan wars, she has never stopped singing. Year after year, her pleasant face, her beautiful smile adorns Afghan TV sets and she singers one musical hit after other. She has performed in live concerts all around the world.

Wajiha
Whilst Wajiha and Parasto and many other female vocalists were native farsi speakers, there was a void for an Afghan female singer who would sing in Pashto - that void was filled by Naghma and Mangal. Naghma is an afghan singer who hails from the pashto speaking parts of Afghanistan and descends from a pashtoon ancestry. Naghma's stunning looks made her the subject of gossip in Afghanistan. It is often claimed that various ministers and even prime ministers in Afghanistan have showered Naghma with expensive and wild gifts in the hopes of fulfilling their wild desires. The desires that were torched by Naghma's essence and looks. To this date, many Afghan women are still jealous of Naghma, as their husbands watch her videos with a thirst for the unfulfilled tryst. After the fall of Russian regime in Afghanistan, Naghma and Mangal fled to Peshawar Pakistan. While in Pakistan, they continued to sing. Infact many of the pakistani populace living in Peshawar started their own following of Naghma engima. Later in 2000's, Naghma and Mangal moved to California, USA. While in US, Naghma filed for divorce from her husband. Following the divorce Naghma is believed to be dating another man, and Mangal seems to be lost in a torrent of darkness and sadness that has engulfed his life - as is eminent from his recent musical performances and compositions.

Following is a wikipedia entry on Naghma:

Naghma was born as Shaperai (Fairy) on January 1, 1964 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. She belongs to the Pashtun ethnic group. As a young girl, she developed an interest in music. Her early songs were based on Kandahari songs, most of which were folkloric in nature but were essential in training the novice. After moving to Kabul, Naghma held various jobs, all the while pursuing her passion. Coming from a traditional family, she met with much resistance from relatives who saw singing as a demeaning career for an Afghan woman. However, Naghma was not discouraged by this. Naghma became a student of a musician-turned-singer.

naghma-mangalNaghma married Mangal, a very well known singer from Laghman. The couple became one of the most popular music icons throughout Afghanistan. They have sung songs in Pashto and Dari and are equally popular among other ethnic groups.

The pivotal point of their career came with the hit single ‘Malek Janah.’ The song was immensely popular and, to this day, remains the couple’s most memorable. Soon after this song came ‘Mazdigar di ka na dai,’ another popular song that enlivened the radio stations of not only Afghanistan but Pakistan and some African countries as well. A number of moderately successful albums followed, after which they performed in a series of well-received concerts. Shaperia Naghma has around 5000 songs on her credit. In addition, she has performed in dozens of concerts around the globe.

With impending civil war, the couple left Afghanistan for Pakistan in 1992. There, they became very successful with an enthusiastic crowd of Afghan exiles who were nostalgic for their native music. Their financial situation by this time had improved significantly. In the late 90’s, they left Pakistan to immigrate to the United States.
After establishing contact with the Afghan community of northern California, the duo held a series of performances. However, Naghma and Mangal have since divorced, citing Mangal’s alleged continual alcohol abuse , and the couple has been sensitive about elaborating further on the issue. Their divorce has also cast a doubt as to whether this former pair can reconcile at least on the professional level. While Mangal performs solo in private events and television programs, Naghma is continuing her career as a professional artist.

In 2006, Naghma’s new single ‘Mohabbat’ was released. This was the first time she had sang a pop song. It is a favorite club remix and the accompanying video is also Kabul TV station’s and AfghanMTV’s most requested video. The song is one of the highest ranking Afghan songs in the world. Also in that year, Naghma returned to Afghanistan to give a round of concerts in various cities with Naim Popal, another popular Afghan singer. During her concert held in Kabul, the crowd showered the singer with rose petals.

Valy - Afghan music singer set to release his second album

When Valy Hedjasi released his first music video titled Bia Tu, Afghans were a bit confused and bewildered. Taken a back by the new style and genre of music, they either completely disregarded the video or took a cautious step towards investigating who Valy is. Nevertheless, the avalanche of music releases by Valy soon put him in the lime light of Afghan music industry. His innovation and style not only inspired the young but also the old Afghan artists. Valy give birth to a new fresh breath of life to the Afghan music industry.

Valy's first album was a mega success and tours after tours were sold out around the world. From Germany to Vancouver, from Virgina to Melbourne, Valy was a force to reckon with. Mothers and fathers would bring their teenage kids to the concert but soon they would end up enjoying the concert more than their kids. Valy is a born entertainer. He knows how to keep audiences up on their feet and energy levels sky high. Valy performs, sings, dances and all praise goes to him for bringing the much needed change to the Afghan music videos.

Although many claims that Valy is an iranian singer, one must acknowledge that he was born in Iran to Afghan parents. He has been to Afghan TV shows where he has claimed his allegiance to the Afghan music industry. Valy seeks inspirations from the legends of Afghan music, Ahmad Zahir and infact on sever TV shows many listeners who were watching the interview, call up and compared him to the King of Afghan Music - Ahmad Zahir. It is not really a fair assessment or comparison but to the many young Afghan kids who were raised here in the West, Valy could indeed be a King of Afghan music by introducing the young masses to their own Afghan heritage and culture through music.

Valy in his own words:
I was born on May 29th, in the pilgrim's city of Mashad in Iran. It was a very rainy day, as my parents have told me. I grew up in the most beautiful city in Germany, Heidelberg. As a child I would always sing songs from my favorite movies. y parents recognized very early what had to be done. My father, who was a musician, showed me how to play different instruments. My mother, God bless her, was the best mother in the world. She let me know that it is all about the passion one has within them that really matters. It's with this passion that I have for music that I express myself. When I sing, and I am on stage in front of thousands of fans, I sing from my heart. I put my heart and passion into my music. Music is all the same whether it be Afghan, Iranian, Arabic, Indian, American and so on. What really matters is the love that one has behind it.

I had met my team in 2006 and everything changed from that point on. Of course, even before I had met them I was earning money through music but at that point I didn’t really know what my future had in store for me. My team motivated me and after 11 months of hard work and dedication, the songs were ready and my debut Album “After Love” hit stores on October 19, 2007.

Many people have asked me over the months whether I am Iranian or Afghan and why I sing in different languages. It’s difficult for me to answer these types of questions because where I am from plays no role. What is really important to me is who I sing for, I sing for you! My fans, if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be here performing on stage for all of you.

I am not a peacemaker or someone that starts a struggle for peace just to sell albums. To me, politics makes no difference what so ever. We are all human and music is one of the things that we all have in common. :) I believe in all religions but I know that the most powerful religion in this world is LOVE. Love is something that surpasses everything. Love brings us all together as one. Love will take us to the highest places as hate takes us no where.

A little message to my fans: I love it when I see how often you visit my homepage, or how often you look at my videos on Youtube. You are the ones that give me energy and keep me going. I hope that I am able to one day visit all my fans all over the world. I hope we see each other on tour! I hope that you all come to my concerts all around the world, but make sure you leave your concerns and problems at home, because I want to sing with you, dance with you, and laugh with you.

I am always here to listen to all your problems. I will personally take the time to solve all your problems. If something is bothering you or you are upset about something, do send me a message. Although it may take me some time to reply your messages (because I am either on tour, traveling, or I just get a lot of messages and can’t always get to all of them at once) I will take the time to answer them myself that way you get my individual attention. You have all always been there for me, and I will always be there for you :)

Ahmad Zahir - The King of Afghan Music

ahmad zahir
Ahmad Zahir was the only son born to a father who was a doctor as well as a minister. He was born within the cradle of wealth in a family that had royal connections. Growing up, Ahmad Zahir was expected to follow his father's footsteps and become a doctor, or perhaps an engineer.
After he finished his high school in Kabul, he was sent to India to study college and perhaps start his studies in Medical education. But once in India, he instead chose to study music. This early life crisis that many Afghan youth faces, brought a lot of friction between Ahmad Zahir and his father. Nevertheless, Ahmad Zahir stood firm on his ground and chose to pursue music. Despite being the son of a minister, he was enlisted into the army. At the army base, fellow officers describe days and nights when Ahmad Zahir would simply practice on his harmonium and chose not to perform any obligatory military services. To many officers hearing Ahmad Zahir's voice in their military compound was soothing and helped them forget about the hardships of life.
Once Ahmad Zahir completed his mandatory military term, he bought himself an apartment room at 'Bilak Hai Nazookmeer' [The Nazook Meer Buildings, Sharinow, Kabul]. Nights would turn into days and days into nights, but the music never stopped at Ahmad Zahir's bachelor compound. It is often said that thrones of beautiful women would frequent Ahmad Zahir's apartment. All mesmerized and hypnotized by the magical voice, style and presentation of 'The Minister's Son'.

Afghan radio stations soon started organizing and broadcasting musical performances of Ahmad Zahir. Within months, the whole nation was engulfed in a new realm and genre of music - a music that they witnessed first hand but tens and hundreds of generations later, the voice would remain alive and oscillate the every living unit of an Afghan's existence.

In total Ahmad Zahir released about 13 albums. Some of his albums are regarded as "Arsheef" (or Archives of Kabul Radio) and "Majlisee" (The gatherings). Arsheef music of Ahmad Zahir are recorded performances often played by an orchestra of Afghanistan's finest musicians. Majlisee albums of Ahmad zahir are recordings of his performances in various family gatherings. His most notable majlisee album is with various Indian musical artists that he recorded at his home. The album highlights Ahmad Zahir's youthful side and a heart warming impromptu musical compositions.

Afghanbuzz.com is proud to bring the Afghan music lovers all the albums of Afghanistan's legendary singer - Ahmad Zahir.
